A nice little bicycle ride

I just took my bicycle down to an old abandoned coastguard station on the lakefront at the entrance to the Cuyahoga river, it made for some cracking pictures! The coastguard station was in use until 1976 when they moved into a bigger facility at the North Coast Harbour, since then it has been unused except for a brief spell as a nightclub in the 1990s (Thanks Wikipedia!). I would also like to offer a big congratulations to the weatherman, who said today would consist of a lovely mix of wind, rain and thunderstorms... well as you can see from the pictures today was a glorious day with no wind, rain or thunderstorms in sight :)

Motown and the perils of preconceptions

Good Morning! I hope you all had a Happy Easter!

A picture that nicely defines Detroit, a bustling city centre in the 30s and a empty shop front today

I would like this post to serve as a little warning to you about the perils of preconceptions. There are a lot of people who will not visit Detroit, they have heard the reports - A drop in population from over 2 million during better times to under 1 million today, 70% of murders go unsolved, police response times vary from an hour to never, two thirds of the cities ambulances are in a state of disrepair, the highest homicide rates in the USA and the list goes on and on. These facts may very well be true but by no means mean that you should avoid Detroit. A lot of the crime is concentrated in certain sections of the city (a little like East Cleveland) away from downtown and so I felt as safe if not safer wandering around Detroit as in any other US city. In fact I felt a darn sight safer wandering around in Detroit that in New York City.

Chess Anyone?

I went there mainly to watch a baseball game but decided to make it into a day trip to give me an opportunity to see the city at the same time, I had heard about all issues and the abandoned buildings and wanted to see it for myself. Well after getting of the bus the first thing that surprised me was how 'nice' it was, I had imagined a very dirty, rundown city with lots of potholes and rubbish everywhere but I thought the city looked quite sharp, Detroit was very much designed for the car and has these wide tree lined boulevards which give the city a nice European feel. It also means there are really wide pavements, which they have fully utilized by putting giant chess boards on the sidewalks which people were enjoying, unfortunately I did not get time to destroy someone at chess myself as there was only an hour or so till game time and after the game I could not find the street again for love nor money.

I picked Michigan Avenue as my road to take to the centre of town and I am very glad that I did as it lead me to the Lafayette Chili Dog restaurant. There are two Chili restaurants right next to each other with quite the competition going between the two of them as to which is best. I was about to walk into the Coney island chili dog shop until one of the punters walked by and told me to try the Lafayette instead... I certainly wasn't going to refuse the advice of a native now was I?! I have absolutely no idea how good the chili dogs are inside Coney island, but the dogs in the Lafayette shop were delicious!!  I got a chili dog and some chili fries which I was busy devouring when the fellow sitting next to me gave me some rather ominous news... he said the chili may only take a matter of seconds to consume... the the farts are guaranteed to last for days! It is a good job Amanda is in Florida then!

A little further down Michigan Avenue I came across capitol square and I am fairly certain that every building on it is abandoned (See Below). Detroit certainly does have a high proportion of abandoned skyscrapers but I quite like that, I think it adds a certain edginess to the city that I find quite appealing.

It was then time for the baseball game! The home team was called the Detroit Tigers and they have a great Ball Park, It has these two huge tigers standing guard over the main entrance, friendly security guards, a very expensive gift shop and an even more expensive bar... Just like any other stadium around the world then. I also think that to go a along with all of the Detroit Tigers world series victories the team can also be proud to say that it has the tackiest score board video thing I have had the pleasure of seeing. Before the games begin, the team like to play a video on the scoreboard to pump up the fans - a nice idea but Detroits video is staggeringly tacky! It involves clips of the the team from the year before achieving great things like hitting a home run, thiswill then morph into a video of a angry tiger clawing at the screen, the video would of course not be complete without the customary fire appearing from the bottom of the screen whenever the Tiger roars. Quite honestly I think I could have made a better video for them in Microsoft paint! I have desperately tried to find it on youtube for you but to no avail. Rest assured that when I do I shall add it to my blog!

After the game I took a walk down to Hart Plaza (:D) on the waterfront. It was nice with some great views over the water to Canada and with some statues with  quotes by famous poets and whatnot but quite frankly I thought the coolest thing about Hart Plaza was its name. I think it is quite a quirky little fact that if you look South over the river from Detroit you see Canada.

So after my little stroll along the riverfront I was getting peckish again and this led to by far and away my favourite part of the day, my visit to the Grand Trunk. This is an old pub in the bottom of what used to be the Metrople Hotel, The hotel is now long gone but the pub remains and is well worth a visit,  I had a local Michigan brew called the Founders ale 'Dirty Bastard' It tasted just like a Guinness except a little sweeter, really really nice :) But this beer was nothing when compared to my dinner.... I had a Shepherds pie!!!! It was the nicest dinner I have had for 6 months... it tasted just like my Mums and even the Cheese tasted good! Cheese tasting good is an incredibly rare occurrence in America! I wanted to take a picture of it for you, but I just couldn't stop eating it for long enough to take the shot, I shoveled it down my throat so fast that by the time I had got my camera out the Shepherds Pie was all gone :(

This once housed the famous Grand Trunk Shepherds Pie, but as with a lot of Detroit it now lies empty.

Here are some pictures of the old home of the Detroit Free Press. It was amazing and slightly sad to see such a beatiful building fall into disrepair, but I thought it was extremely cool that you could walk round to the back of it and see the old loading bays where they used to get the papers into vans and dispersed around the city. The building made for some nice pictures :)

The day ended on a positive note as well, My bus was supposed to arrive back into Cleveland at 12.40 with the last train leaving to our school at 1am, however due to the bus leaving late I was resigned to an expensive taxi ride home but decided I would go and check if there was a bus heading my way... I was delighted to find out that the bus that runs past our school in the daytime becomes the airport bus at night and so it runs 24 hours a day!!! I'll take a 2 dollar bus ride over a taxi fare any day :)

In other good news I have finally gotten around to passing my driving test!

They say Tomayto, I say Tomaahto

Yes! You heard it here first, I am delighted to say I have rejoined the workforce and can now be found working in a Mexican restaurant :D it is very different but it is so much fun and the people are great! It may not be the best pay in the world but it will certainly keep me more than entertained for the time being, I spent my day today crying over the onions and making Guacamole... Yummy! The restaurant is only 3 miles away so I decided to cycle there today... it took me over half an hour which is a record setting speed of 6 mph! there are so many bloody traffic lights everywhere (not just at the major intersections but for every single little street, including some corners) it is just ridiculous, I think next time I shall walk it, might be quicker!!

The USA is leap years behind the UK in terms of accommodating cyclists... the potholes are deadly and there are no bike racks anywhere except downtown, even in the city centre cycling can be a problem, I decided to cycle down to a baseball game but had to take a detour around half of the city because they had made all of the roads leading to the stadium pedestrian only (a sign specifically said no cycling, skateboarding or rollerblading), I decided to cycle down it anyway only to find TWO policemen running after me yelling at me to stop. I told them this is absurd there is no one walking here can I just ride it to the end of the street? 'No sir, someone might walk there' what on earth? Pedestrians aren't exactly held in high esteem in America either, so you can only imagine how bad it must be for cyclists if they are even lower down the pecking order than pedestrians, on the same level as skateboarders and rollerbladers!

something else that is not particularly great for cycling is the weather here, the last week has been unbelievable! get this... on Sunday it topped out at 27C, on Monday it was 24C with some thunderstorms mixed in and have a guess as to what you think the temperature was on Tuesday?

nope, you're wrong! It was -2C with snowstorms!!!

How does that happen? It is just crazy, today was about 20 degrees yet we still have a load of snow on the ground from Tuesday, I really really really hope that was the last of the snow!

I am going on a little road trip to Detroit tomorrow to sample some local brews and watch a baseball game, I shall be sure to let you know if Detroit is as bad as everyone says it is... although I have a feeling I may be pleasantly surprised, I am sure there are a lot of areas I would not wish to go but I have heard the police still 'control' downtown so it isn't that bad! It is unbelievable what that city has had to go through, from the wealth and prosperity of the 50s and 60 through the race riots to bankrupcy due to the collapse of the big 3 car companies, GM, Chrysler and Ford (GM alone had a bigger GDP than the whole of Norway!) You could only imagine the problems that would cause!!

Ooooh, I have been listening to a lot of Kirsty MacColl recently, I was reminded of her as to get to the train station from our new place I get to walk down Madison Avenue... this is such a great song I am going to share a link to it for you all to enjoy :)

For anybody who happens to still be reading you are in for a treat, here are some pictures of a nice walk amanda and me took to the Rocky River Reservation, it is only 2 miles (or a 2 day cycle ride, pedestrian, traffic lights and weather permitting) and there are several nesting pairs of bald eagles there! Unfortunately to protect them they keep the precise location of the nests a secret so we had to make to with a beaver lodge and some lovely views :)

It's time for baseball!

Well today is opening day here in Cleveland, and in the words of NBA Hall of Famer Joe Tait "It is a Beeeeeautiful day for baseball.... if you're a duck!"

There is Nowhere Like America....

So this morning I wake up to snow on the ground while it is also raining heavily and 15 degrees! But that is nothing compared to the shock I received after waking up at about 3am last night.....

I had fallen asleep listening to the Cleveland Indians baseball club on the radio, they annihilated the Oakland Athleticss 2-0 to remain undefeated (it was the first game) for the season. It is nice to be able to hear baseball on the radio again, the last time I listened to baseball was on BBC 5Live with the sounds of the ballpark wafting through my lovely Roberts Digital radio during while watching it piss down outside... the perfect way to spend an English summers day! I was extremely sad to see that the BBC is no longer covering the games on the radio although I suppose it is not wholly unexpected, I always imagined that I was one of about 5 people who tuned in to listen! Having baseball back in America is also great news for a different reason... it means that Summer is on the way!!! Woohooo!

Anyway back to my story! Unfortunately as the game was played on the West Coast while I am on the East Coast which meant that the first pitch was not until 10 PM and I must have dropped off practically straight away as the next thing I remember is waking up with a start at 3AM to hear that the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight is not in fact in the middle of the Indian Ocean, but is currently in Pakistan, being loaded with Nuclear warheads ready for a imminent strike on America! 

Ahhh, American radio... you have just gotta love it :)

Completely unrelated to the blog entry above but that's how we like it! Here is a nice picture of all of my buddies (and some cousins, too!) outside of the Cutty Sark in Greenwich at my leaving party. I had such a lovely time thank you all for coming :)
